Ava's Birth Story

Ava Pearl McFarlane
10-12-10  *  10:42 pm
6 pounds 9 ounces   *  19 and a 1/2 inches

First off, my due date was October 5th. I had high hopes at my last appointment with Dr. Johansson on October 4th but, I was still not even dilated to a one! She had told me 4 weeks prior that if I was dilated to at least a one, we could induce labor. She then told us that if the baby doesn't come by Monday, October 11th, then head on over to the hospital and we'll have this baby! I'll admit I was frustrated when I heard the baby was most likely not going to come on October 5th or within the next few days to follow. However, with an exact end date in sight, I was somewhat satisfied (but still annoyed that I was going way over my due date).

 October 11th, 7:58 pm:

Vaughn and I arrive at McKay-Dee hospital ready to get this show on the road.
I had no idea that nearly 27 long hours later, Ava would finally make her appearance into the world.

The nurse walked us to our birthing suite, room 4510 and we settled in. First, the nurse put the IV in the top of my hand and that was very painful for me, even more so than other things.
They gave me a pill to help soften the cervix. This had to be done before they could start Pitocin (a med that  helps induce labor).
In the meantime, my wonderful mom, brother Zac and cousin Kyrsten all came up to the hospital to keep us company. It was nice to have some distractions. I could only have ice and suckers to eat and I didn't really like the suckers they had at the hospital so everyone went to the store to get me some jolly ranchers. I was very grateful for those! Around midnight, Vaughn and I decided we wanted to try and get some sleep. So my family left and then it was just us. Poor Vaughn had to try and get some sleep on those uncomfortable couch bed things and I in those terrible hospital beds. Needless to say there was not much shut eye going on that night. I got 2 hours sleep the whole night, Vaughn maybe 4 or 5.

October 12th, 6:30 am:
While we were still half asleep, Julia (Dr. Johansson) arrives. I had still not yet dilated to a one and she told me she was going to break my water. What?! I couldn't believe it, finally some progress! Five seconds later, she was all done. Vaughn was still trying to wake up, "Wait, did she just break your water?". It all happened so fast. "Yes, she did", I told him.
It's a crazy, weird feeling to have your water broken, especially afterward. I wanted to get up and get ready for the day and as soon as I did that, well let's just say I could not believe how much water there really is in there! Wow!
October 12th, 11:30 am:
I had been experiencing mild contractions for several hours by now, bad cramping that felt like "that time of the month". The bed was so uncomfortable after that many hours so I sat in a chair and walked around during labor instead. I was dilated to a 2 by this point and pretty disappointed that my body was seeming to fight this inducing process. My mom came around 1:00 pm to join us, then Kyr and Zac followed later at about 4:00 pm. I finally caved in and asked for the epidural at about 2:00 pm. Ah, sweet relief! It wasn't nearly as bad or as scary as I thought it might be. Just a bit strange as I felt my lower half go numb. I also couldn't move legs at all, that was definitely crazy! If I wanted to turn in bed, I had to have Vaughn or the nurse move my legs for me.
Meanwhile, we all watched a movie, some T.V. and chatted while we waited and waited and waited.
Slow, very slow progress. I finally arrived to the dilation of a six and held on that for hours. Around 8:30 pm I had slowly progressed to an 8. Vaughn called his parents, my wonderful father in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Janet to come since it was getting close. Paige and Kyle thankfully came also. I was grateful that they were there to support us.

October 12th, 10:01 pm:

I had been feeling a slight pressure and urge to push for a while and asked the nurse to come check me.
She did and told me "You're a ten!", let's have this baby girl! I couldn't believe what I just heard, is this really happening? It seemed as though this moment would never come and finally, after so much waiting, preparation and more waiting, it was definitely happening! I got nervous and a little scared at this point. Vaughn and I wanted to have a few moments alone before we became parents for the first time.
It was a very special few moments we shared in room 4510..

My amazing nurse, Lisa was the absolute best. She (and my sweet Vaughn) helped me every step of the way and was there directing me on what to do until Julia arrived. Vaughn was quite the labor coach I must add, very encouraging. I was apprehensive about the delivery process and pushing and didn't quite know what to expect. It was actually a neat experience and I was a lot more calm and relaxed than I had anticipated. I pushed for about 40 minutes and then at 10:42 pm, our miracle, little tiny Ava was born!
They immediately put her on my chest, she was crying as I held her and Vaughn was right there saying how cute she was. What a special gift from heaven!
I couldn't really get a good look at her since she was so close to me but, I was just so happy to finally hold her in my arms. The whole delivery was a breeze compared to what happened next.

October 12th, 10:50 pm:
(a bit graphic)
The worst, most painful and traumatic 15 minutes of my life happened immediately after Ava was born.
Apparently the placenta had prematurely aged and was coming in pieces (it's normally supposed to be fully intact, smooth and in one piece). Julia was even puzzled by it and her and the nurses couldn't figure out what was going on at first. They seemed almost as worried as I was. Parts of the placenta were stuck in my uterus and they had to get it out or it could cause infection. I had to have a procedure called (D&C) Dilation and Curettage done. The D stands for dilation, which means enlarging. Curettage (the C) means scraping. It's more commonly used following miscarriages or abortions in cases where the uterus fails to fully empty its content. They had to push on my stomach (extremely hard and it was mighty painful) and scrape out the remaining parts of the placenta with a sharp, spoon thing. I was screaming and crying out in pain. It was more than I could handle and the pain was worse than the kidney stones I had 3 months ago. Vaughn was videotaping Ava as she was getting weighed and examined but, he had to turn it off because I was screaming and crying. He didn't want that part remembered for my sake.
I had the epidural but, I think by this point it had started to wear off because I felt everything. It was seriously so horrible. They gave me more medication during the procedure to try and lessen the pain but that caused me to get nauseous and I threw up. I kept throwing up every 10 minutes after that for about 2 hours.
My body went into shock (as some women do after they give birth) I was shaking uncontrollably, I was freezing cold and had ten blankets on me (that's the picture you see below of Lisa, Vaughn holding Ava and me passed out in bed). I felt like a bad mommy for not being able to hold Ava until several hours after she was born. I just couldn't though, I was so out of it. Poor Vaughn, was beside himself and so worried about me. He later told me he had never seen me act like that or be in that much pain. I told him that's because I hadn't. I told Vaughn that I don't even want to think about another baby for at least 3 years. Hopefully by then the traumatic events will have faded. After all was said and done though, it was worth it to have our sweet little Ava in our arms. We are so thankful that Heavenly Father is trusting us to raise this sweet, special girl. We love her more each day!

We are so grateful for all the family and friends who came to visit!

Look how precious and perfect she is!

I love, love, love kissing Ava! This was my first time holding her (apart from the skin to skin contact right after she was born) I was SO miserable that I couldn't even hold her until about 3 hours after she was born.

We are so in love with her

She looks a lot like me when I was a newborn in this photo:

Are We Done Yet?

Down to the last stretch! And stretch it is.

I feel like I'm going to pop, not the greatest feeling.
Every day that passes I just get more and more anxious to meet our baby girl.

I can't believe that 8 months ago our baby was only the size of an itty bitty poppyseed like the ones pictured below:
We also can't believe that I am now considered full term and could have our baby any time within the next 2-3 weeks. Sooner if I had my way!

She was measured today at my appointment and now weighs 6 lbs!

I long to hold her in my arms and I long for my old body back. These ribs are killing me.

Dear baby McFarlane,

Please come very, very soon.

Love,
 Mommy and Daddy

36 Weeks

...and 3 days pregnant.

It's really strange to feel a human hiccuping inside your lower abdomen.
Felt that for the first time on Labor day and it's happened everyday since.

We (I) am so ready for our baby to just get here already! Her room is ready and waiting.

At our appointment yesterday Dr. Julia told us she weighs 5 & a 1/2 lbs.

We can't wait to meet our baby girl!

What I know at 35 weeks . . .

(us at our baby shower last week)

People are so nice to me! I love the attention (even from complete strangers), everyone offering me the front seat in the car, smiles and questions.

It's very painful at times to turn from side to side at night.

Fatigue has set in again. I just can't get enough sleep!

Walking has become harder and harder. My feet hurt and I can't walk more than 10 minutes or I feel like I'm going to break into a million pieces.

I got an awesome diaper bag yesterday. It's actually an over-sized handbag with lots a pockets that I made into a diaper bag, very chic. I wasn't finding one that I liked well enough, I'm not into Winnie the Pooh or baby duck designs.

As of yesterday, I think her head has begun to settle into the pelvic area. Means we're getting closer!

I think I'm most nervous for the whole delivery and breastfeeding part. For sure.

We just packed the hospital bag(s) so we are ready to go anytime she decides to make her appearance within the next few weeks!

Old Dresser, New Look

Our baby has been in need a dresser for all the many cute clothes we got from the baby shower.
I updated this old thing from the 80's with some paint, and added new knobs.

Total cost: $25
I love how it turned out!

33

Only 6 more weeks to go!

Vaughn and I toured the Labor and Delivery wing of McKay-Dee on Tuesday.

We saw the CUTEST babies in the nursery, I fell in love and immediately wished our little one was already here. Two of the babies had lots of black hair, oh so adorable. I really hope our little girl inherits the thick black hair I had when I was born.

After the tour, it's beginning to seem even more real now and it's so hard to believe that we will be having a baby possibly next month. We will become parents anytime within the next 6 weeks...crazy!

I can almost imagine the day she arrives and how happy we'll be that she's finally here.
It's so surreal.

She's moving around so much these days and we both love to lay in bed at night and feel her activity.
She's getting so big! Last Wednesday the doctor measured her at 4.7 lbs and 17 inches.
I'd imagine she is now close to 5 lbs this week.

Sleep is getting harder to come by lately during the nights.
My ribs are KILLING me.
While out and about, people sometimes stare at me (well, my belly).
It's getting really difficult to get out of bed.
I've never been this big in my entire life and it is very strange. I dearly miss my flat stomach.
All of this, however, will be totally worth it after one look at our sweet baby girl.

Vaughn and I can't wait to hold and kiss her.
We love our baby so much already and we haven't even met her yet!

Oh and so looking forward to my baby shower tomorrow!!!

32 Weeks!

She likes to push out on my sides, particularly the right side. She's pretty active at night and quiet during the morning which makes us think she's just like her mommy and daddy. We are both night owls and morning sleepy-heads. On occasion, we are known to sleep in until 10:00 am on a Saturday morn!

Vaughn and I are getting more and more nervous, anxious, excited and overwhelmed each day at the thought of our baby coming so soon. It's very possible that she could come next month! Wow, it's so crazy to think that we could become parents in a matter of 7-8 weeks...

Are we ready?
 I like to think so.

Her room is partially complete, about 50% I'd say. For the past 4 months I've been purchasing diapers/wipes periodically and we now have quite the collection, although I'm sure we could never have too many! I've organized them by weight/age.

My baby shower is next Friday and we are so excited! It makes this all seem even more real.

We went up to North Fork last night to have dinner, a campfire and some fun with good friends.

It's not the best pic of the belly but, here I am at 32 weeks:

What I now know

31 weeks:

1. I'm 7 months pregnant! It is still so surreal, sometimes Vaughn and I look at each other and we can't believe we are having a baby!

2. Only 9 weeks left! It's starting to finally sink in, kind of.

3. Vaughn said he will paint my toenails for me. How sweet and cute is he?

4. I feel very blessed. This has been a smooth-sailing pregnancy so far, and the baby is healthy.

5. I guess I really wouldn't mind if she decided to come a week or two early, I really want her to be born at the end of September...hint, hint.

6. Heartburn isn't too bad, although a few nights it's been really bad, more like acid reflux/heartburn and I can't sleep at all. Also, no major back pain, eating habits are pretty normal, (although I do enjoy almonds, Raisinets, and strawberries a lot) and NO stretch marks on my belly. I count myself very lucky.

7. I've gained 20 pounds so far. 9 weeks left = hopefully only 10-15 more pounds.

8. I have to officially roll out of bed now. Can no longer use my abs to sit straight up. If I try, Vaughn helps.

9. Our baby girl likes to stretch. She'll stretch her feet against my ribs and push, making my stomach contort in all sorts of shapes.

10. We get a good laugh at how funny my stomach looks when I flex it while laying down. It turns into this long triangle shaped thing.

11. Sometimes when I'm trying to pass through small spaces, I still suck in thinking it will help. It doesn't!

12. She still doesn't have a name yet. We have a couple favorites, but we just can't decide. Guess you'll have to wait another 60 something days to find out!
